Introduction
The book is structured into sixteen main chapters. The first chapter presents the Buddha’s birth and early years, including canonical memories of the Bodhisatta and early signs surrounding his future enlightenment. The second chapter narrates the struggle for enlightenment: renunciation, training, austerities, meditation, confrontation with Māra, and awakening. The third chapter describes the period after enlightenment, especially the Buddha’s contemplation of dependent arising and the meaning of liberation. The fourth chapter follows the spreading of the Dhamma and the formation of the early teaching mission. The fifth and sixth chapters focus on important disciples and lay supporters, including the two chief disciples and Anāthapiṇḍika. The seventh chapter presents the formation of the order of nuns. Later chapters cover disputes within the Saṅgha, the end of the first twenty years, the middle period of the Buddha’s ministry, the Buddha’s personal qualities, doctrinal teachings, Devadatta’s opposition, old age, the last year, and the First Council. Together, these chapters form a disciplined canonical biography of the Buddha’s life, ministry, teaching, community, and final legacy.
