Introduction
The book is organized as a historical survey of Burmese Pāli literary development. The opening discussion explains the dependence of Burmese Pāli literature on the broader Pāli tradition of India and Ceylon, while also emphasizing Burma’s distinct contribution to Buddhist learning. Chapter I, “The Classical Pāli Literature—Arrival of the Pāli Tipiṭaka in Burma,” introduces the canonical foundations of Burmese Buddhist literature, including the Tipiṭaka, Sutta and Abhidhamma texts, Paritta literature, Vinaya materials, commentaries, and early traditions concerning the transmission of the Pāli canon into Burma. Chapter II, “The Rise of Pāli Scholarship in Upper Burma,” examines the development of learned monastic culture after the consolidation of Buddhist influence in Pagan, with attention to grammatical treatises, exegetical works, monastic authors, and connections with Ceylonese scholastic lineages. The later sections continue the survey of Burmese Pāli authors, grammatical and commentarial works, Vinaya studies, Abhidhamma literature, chronicles, and related scholastic compositions, showing how Burmese Buddhist scholarship became an important vehicle for preserving and extending Theravāda intellectual culture.
