Introduction

The book’s core content is organized around the Bodhisattva Precepts of the Chinese Brahma’s Net Sutra. The first section, “Preparation,” establishes the ritual and spiritual setting for receiving the precepts, preparing practitioners to enter the bodhisattva path with sincerity and responsibility. The second section, “The Origin of the Bodhisattva Precepts,” explains the doctrinal basis of the precepts in Buddha-nature and the Mahāyāna vision that all beings possess the capacity for awakening. The third and central section, “The Ten Major and the Forty-Eight Secondary Precepts,” presents the ethical framework itself, beginning with grave moral prohibitions and extending into detailed guidance on compassionate conduct, teaching, community responsibility, respect for the Dharma, care for beings, and the cultivation of a bodhisattva life. The fourth section, “Conclusion,” draws the precepts together as a complete discipline of compassion and awareness, while the fifth section, “Apology and Dedication,” closes the text in the traditional spirit of humility, repentance, and dedication of merit for the welfare of all beings.
