The Path of Freedom: Vimuttimagga
Introduction
The Vimuttimagga, or Path of Freedom, is one of the most important surviving manuals of Buddhist doctrine and meditation from the early centuries of the Common Era. Traditionally attributed to Arahant Upatissa, the work is believed to have originated within an early Buddhist school associated with South Asian or Sri Lankan traditions. Although the original Indian-language version has been lost, the text was preserved in Chinese translation under the title Jietuo Dao Lun (解脫道論).
The work is of particular historical importance because of its close relationship to Buddhaghosa’s Visuddhimagga (The Path of Purification). Both texts organize the Buddhist path around the threefold training of morality, concentration, and wisdom, and both contain detailed classifications of meditation practices. Scholars have therefore used the Vimuttimaggato investigate the historical development of Buddhist meditation manuals and the doctrinal environment preceding the classical Theravāda commentarial tradition.
Among its major topics are virtue (sīla), concentration (samādhi), wisdom (paññā), the cultivation of loving-kindness and other brahmavihāras, mindfulness of breathing, recollections, kasiṇa meditation, analysis of the elements, insight knowledge, and the stages leading toward liberation. The work also discusses Buddhist psychology, cosmology, meditative attainments, and doctrinal categories found in early Buddhist literature.
The Vimuttimagga is particularly significant because it preserves a meditation system that appears to predate or develop independently from the mature Theravāda commentarial synthesis represented by the Visuddhimagga. It therefore offers important evidence for the history of Buddhist meditation theory in South and Southeast Asia.
