Introduction

The Visuddhimagga is a foundational post-canonical work of Theravāda Buddhism that systematically interprets the teachings preserved in the Pāli Tipiṭaka. Composed by Buddhaghosa, it presents purification as a progressive transformation of conduct, mind, and understanding. Bhikkhu Ñāṇamoli’s English translation makes accessible its detailed classifications of meditation, consciousness, mental factors, dependent origination, insight knowledge, and liberation. The work remains a major reference for the study of Theravāda doctrine, Abhidhamma psychology, contemplative practice, and the historical development of the Pāli commentarial tradition.
