The Śūraṅgama Sūtra (Leng Yen Ching)

The opening section begins with Ānanda’s spiritual crisis and the Buddha’s subsequent inquiry into the location and nature of mind. Through an extended series of dialogues, the Buddha dismantles Ānanda’s mistaken identification of mind with sensory perception, cognition, the body, and external phenomena. 

A central theme is the Tathāgata Store (Tathāgatagarbha), presented as the fundamental, luminous, unborn, and undying nature underlying both noumenon and phenomenon. The text repeatedly contrasts discriminating consciousness with the profound “True Mind,” and investigates the five aggregates, six consciousnesses, six sense organs, six sense objects, eighteen fields of sense, and seven elements. These analyses serve to demonstrate that phenomena are neither independently created nor self-existent, but arise through delusion and conditioned discrimination. 

The later sections move from doctrinal analysis to meditative practice. They discuss self-enlightenment, methods of meditation, the “six knots,” the twenty-five approaches to realization, ethical discipline, Bodhisattva development, the six planes of existence, karmic retribution, and warnings concerning fifty false states associated with the five aggregates. The overall structure therefore combines metaphysics, Buddhist psychology, meditation theory, ethics, cosmology, and practical guidance toward liberation and Buddhahood.
