The Three Jewels: The Central Ideals of Buddhism

The book opens with a Preface explaining that the growing Western interest in Buddhism reflects a search for a spiritual framework free from authoritarian dogma yet deep enough to guide psychological and spiritual aspiration. Sangharakshita identifies this commitment as Going for Refuge to the Three Jewels, an inward act of transformation through which one’s life is reoriented toward Enlightenment. Part One, “The Buddha,” begins with “Life and Records,” showing the Buddha as the source of the Path to Enlightenment and discussing the historical records, scriptural materials, biographies, and traditional accounts of his life. “The Bodhisattva Career” explains rebirth, causal continuity, Jātaka traditions, perfections, bodhicitta, and the long preparation for Buddhahood. “The Life” presents the Buddha’s birth, renunciation, austerities, Enlightenment, first sermon, formation of the Sangha, missionary activity, major disciples, Devadatta, final journey, and parinirvāṇa. “The Legends” considers legendary material not merely as fiction, but also as symbolic expressions of spiritual truth. “Philosophical Interpretations” examines deeper understandings of the Buddha’s nature. Part Two, “The Dharma,” introduces approaches to Buddhism, the essence of the Dharma, doctrinal formulas, cosmology, the Wheel of Life, the nature of existence, the human condition, the stages of the path, and the goal of Buddhist practice. Part Three, “The Sangha,” explains the spiritual community through the assembly of the noble, the glorious company of Bodhisattvas, the monastic order, the place of the laity, and popular Buddhism. Through this structure, the book shows that the Three Jewels are not peripheral objects of reverence, but the core principles through which Buddhism becomes intelligible, practicable, and transformative.
