Introduction

The Vibhanga, the second book of the Abhidhamma Piṭaka, occupies a central place in the Theravāda Buddhist canonical tradition. As a systematic analytical treatise, it examines fundamental doctrinal categories such as the aggregates (khandha), sense bases (āyatana), elements (dhātu), truths (sacca), faculties (indriya), dependent origination (paṭiccasamuppāda), and other key teachings of the Buddha. Through its methodical exposition, the Vibhaṅga provides a bridge between the concise formulations of the Sutta Piṭaka and the detailed philosophical analysis characteristic of the Abhidhamma. This edition, edited by Mrs. Rhys Davids and published by the Pali Text Society in 1904, represents one of the earliest critical efforts to preserve and disseminate the Pāli canonical texts for modern scholarship. It remains an invaluable resource for students, researchers, and practitioners seeking a deeper understanding of early Buddhist psychology, philosophy, and doctrinal analysis.
