The book is organized into thirteen chapters. The first chapter presents the birth and early life of Prince Siddhartha, including the religious conditions of India, his birth at Lumbini, royal upbringing, marriage, renunciation, enlightenment, first sermon, formation of the Sangha, major disciples, Devadatta, Angulimala, and the Buddha’s final passing away. The second chapter focuses on the astrologers’ prediction, King Suddhodana’s precautions, the four signs, renunciation, austerities, the Middle Path, enlightenment, the beginning of preaching, conversion of early disciples, and the spread of the doctrine. The third chapter explains the Yāna teachings, including the Buddhist councils, Tripiṭaka, Hīnayāna, Mahāyāna, Vajrayāna, the three turnings of the wheel of Dharma, early development of Buddhism in India, the spread of Buddhism across Asia, and its decline and re-establishment in India. The remaining chapters discuss the founding of Buddhism, enlightenment, the essence of the Buddha’s teachings, awakening in the present life, meditation, the Noble Eightfold Path, the question of self, karma, refuge in ultimate truth, and final practice. Together, these chapters present Buddhism as a path of ethical discipline, meditative cultivation, wisdom, compassion, and liberation from suffering.
