Introduction
The book is organized into five principal sections. Uragavagga includes suttas such as Uragasutta, Dhaniyasutta, Khaggavisāṇasutta, Kasibhāradvājasutta, Kundasutta, Parābhavasutta, Vasalasutta, Mettasutta, and Hemavatasutta, presenting teachings on abandoning passions, spiritual independence, the superiority of inner cultivation over worldly possessions, the dignity of true renunciation, causes of moral decline, the ethical—not hereditary—basis of nobility, loving-kindness toward all beings, and the liberating knowledge of the Buddha. Kulavagga develops further ethical and doctrinal themes through concise discourses addressed to monks, householders, Brahmins, ascetics, and seekers. Mahāvagga expands the doctrinal range with teachings on Buddhist discipline, the Buddha’s authority, spiritual striving, and the qualities of the noble path. Aṭṭhakavagga focuses on detachment from speculative views, sensual craving, conflict, pride, and attachment to doctrines, emphasizing inner peace and freedom from clinging. Pārāyanavagga presents the quest for the “further shore,” structured around questions and answers concerning wisdom, liberation, the overcoming of birth and death, and the realization of the highest Buddhist goal.
