Introduction
The volume opens with a brief discussion of Buddhist canonical literature and the historical development of Pāli texts. The First Khandhaka, “The Admission to the Order of Bhikkhus,” begins with events following the Buddha’s enlightenment, including dependent origination, the decision to teach, the first sermon, and the formation of the earliest Saṅgha. It subsequently sets out procedures and qualifications for ordination, the duties of preceptors and pupils, and various circumstances affecting admission to monastic life.
The Second Khandhaka focuses primarily on the institutional observance of Uposatha, including the establishment of communal boundaries, the assembly of monks, the recitation of the Pātimokkha, and procedures for maintaining the validity and harmony of formal acts of the Saṅgha. The Third Khandhaka, “Residence During the Rainy Season, Vassa,” explains the institution of the annual rains retreat, its prescribed dates, conditions for temporary absence, and the responsibilities of monks during this period. Together, these sections present the Vinaya as both a historical record and an operational system for monastic discipline and communal administration.
