Introduction
The book opens by raising the question “Where is the Buddha?” and explains why this question arises from a worldly mode of thinking that assumes continued physical or divine existence. It then contrasts Buddhist understanding with theistic ideas of God, creation, eternal soul, divine grace, and salvation, emphasizing that the Buddha was an enlightened teacher who discovered the truth through cultivated wisdom rather than through revelation from a higher power. The text explains that only human beings can develop the mind to the level of Buddhahood, and that Buddhism is based not on belief but on right understanding, learning, practice, and personal verification. It further discusses ethical life through examples such as kindness, honesty, non-killing, and non-stealing, showing that morality is grounded in reason, experience, and compassion rather than external commandment. A significant part of the work clarifies the role of Buddha images: the image is not an idol to be worshipped, but a symbolic aid for recollection, reverence, meditation, and calming the mind. The author also discusses the distinction between the Buddha’s physical body and the Dhamma-body, noting that the physical form disappeared after parinirvana, while the Dhamma remains available as the living truth. The final pages return to the main question and argue that asking where the Buddha went is less important than practicing the teaching he gave. Nirvana is presented not as a place, but as a state of liberation from suffering, and the Buddha is ultimately found in the mind that understands and realizes the Dhamma.
