Introduction

Abhidhamma Studies: Researches in Buddhist Psychology, by Nyanaponika Thera, is a scholarly exploration of Theravāda Abhidhamma with particular attention to its philosophical and psychological significance. The studies grew out of the author’s work on the Dhammasaṅgaṇī and its commentary, the Atthasālinī, and combine doctrinal analysis, Buddhist psychology, textual research, and reflections on the practical application of Abhidhamma teachings. The book examines the structure and method of Abhidhamma thought, the classification of consciousness and mental factors, the doctrine of non-self (anattā), meditation, and the problem of time. Nyanaponika presents Abhidhamma not merely as a scholastic system, but as a living analytical method intended to clarify experience and support the Buddhist path to liberation.
