The Heart of Buddhist Meditation: A Handbook of Mental Training Based on the Buddha’s Way of Mindfulness
Introduction
Nyanaponika Thera (1901–1994) was a German-born Buddhist monk, scholar, and meditation teacher who became one of the most influential interpreters of Theravāda Buddhism in the twentieth century. He was closely associated with the Buddhist Publication Society in Kandy, Sri Lanka, and served for many years as its president and editor.
The Heart of Buddhist Meditation is his best-known work and has been translated into numerous languages. The book centers on Satipaṭṭhāna—the establishment or foundations of mindfulness—which Nyanaponika regarded as a central method of Buddhist mental cultivation. Rather than treating mindfulness as an isolated technique, he situates it within the framework of the Noble Eightfold Path, insight meditation, and the ultimate Buddhist goal of liberation.
The work is significant both as a practical meditation manual and as a scholarly introduction to early Buddhist contemplative thought. Drawing extensively on the Pāli Canon, commentarial literature, and related Buddhist sources, Nyanaponika combines textual precision with a systematic explanation of meditation practice. His concept of “Bare Attention” became particularly influential in the later international development of mindfulness and insight meditation.
Combining scriptural scholarship with practical meditation instruction, the book has become a modern classic of Theravāda Buddhist literature. Its clear exposition and close grounding in the early Buddhist canon make it an important reference for students of Buddhist meditation, Pāli Buddhism, mindfulness studies, and comparative contemplative traditions.
