Introduction

Giới thiệu chung: The complete work is organized as a three-part translation of the Dhammapada Commentary. Part 1 provides the scholarly foundation of the set: it introduces the legendary life of the Buddha, central Buddhist teachings, meditation, the canonical position of the Dhammapada, the structure and character of the Commentary, its recurring motifs, literary parallels, date, authorship, and textual editions, before presenting synopses and translations of Books 1 and 2. Part 2 continues the translation with Books 3 to 12, beginning with “Thoughts” (Citta Vagga) and developing themes such as mental discipline, heedfulness, monastic practice, moral self-control, generosity, and the karmic consequences of conduct. Part 3 completes the work with Books 13 to 26, including important narratives such as the Buddha’s visit to Kapila, the attainment of insight by meditating monks, the transformation of grief, the conversion of Aṅgulimāla, and numerous stories illustrating impermanence, compassion, lay devotion, and liberation. Across the three volumes, each story functions as a narrative frame for a Dhammapada verse, showing how Buddhist doctrine is made memorable through ethical drama, human conflict, supernatural imagery, and examples of spiritual transformation. The collection is therefore valuable not only as a translation of Pāli commentarial literature but also as a comprehensive archive of Buddhist moral imagination, religious instruction, and narrative pedagogy.
