Introduction

Particular attention is given to several formulations of difference-and-non-difference associated with thinkers such as Audulomi, Kāśakṛtsna, Lakulīśa, Bhartṛprapañca, Bhāskara, Yādavaprakāśa, and Nimbārka. The introduction explains how these thinkers conceptualize the relation between Brahman, the individual self (jīva), and the world, often describing them as simultaneously distinct and inseparable. It also discusses causation, transformation, dependence, liberation, divine agency, and the ontological status of the world.

Part Two provides chronologically arranged summaries of works attributed to or associated with Bhartṛprapañca, Nimbārka, Śrīnivāsācārya, Bhāskara, Keśava Kāśmīri Bhaṭṭa, Puruṣottamācārya, Śrīkaṇṭha, and later representatives of related traditions. These summaries analyze scriptural interpretation, metaphysics, devotion, liberation, epistemology, and debates with Advaita, Sāṃkhya, Buddhism, Nyāya-Vaiśeṣika, and other schools. The volume thus documents an important but frequently underrepresented current within Vedānta, demonstrating the diversity of Indian theories concerning unity, plurality, causation, God, self, and world.
