Introduction
The book is organized into seven major chapters. Chapter I, “The East and the West: A Contrast of Cultures,” establishes the author’s central framework by contrasting spiritual and material orientations, inward and outward civilization, self-renunciation and self-assertion, and the primacy of soul-life over economic life. Chapter II compares English and Sanskrit literature, using literary traditions to illuminate contrasting cultural temperaments. Chapter III, “The Hindu Ethical Attitude,” studies moral ideals such as renunciation, self-discipline, duty, love, non-injury, and disinterested action. Chapter IV, “Ancient Hindu Politics,” examines political thought in relation to dharma, social order, and spiritual values. Chapter V discusses Hindu theology, including polytheism, pantheism, theism, and image-worship, largely by clarifying what Hindu theology is not. Chapter VI introduces Hindu metaphysics, while Chapter VII presents the doctrine of Advaita as the philosophical summit of the work. Overall, the book presents ancient Hindu culture as a unified civilizational system grounded in religious consciousness, ethical restraint, metaphysical inquiry, and the realization of the Self.
