Introduction

The book opens with the life of the Buddha and then develops the core vision of Buddhism as a path of direct understanding, moral responsibility, and liberation rather than belief in divine authority or speculative doctrine. Chapter 1, “The Buddhist Attitude of Mind,” explains the Buddha’s emphasis on free inquiry, personal verification, tolerance, and the practical purpose of the Dhamma. The next major section presents the Four Noble Truths, beginning with dukkha, interpreted not merely as ordinary suffering but as the deeper unsatisfactoriness of conditioned existence; the second truth explains craving as the arising of dukkha; the third truth presents Nirodha, the cessation of dukkha; and the fourth truth explains Magga, the Noble Eightfold Path, as the disciplined way of ethical conduct, mental cultivation, and wisdom. The chapter on anatta analyzes the absence of a permanent soul or self through the doctrine of the five aggregates, showing that personality is a changing psycho-physical process rather than an enduring essence. The chapter on bhāvanā presents meditation as mental culture, focusing on the development of mindfulness, concentration, clarity, and insight. The final section applies Buddhist teaching to ordinary life, emphasizing that the Dhamma is not limited to monks or monastic settings but is a practical discipline for all people living in society.
