Introduction

Amitābha: A Story of Buddhist Theology is a unique philosophical novel written by Paul Carus to introduce Buddhist thought to Western readers in the early twentieth century. Set in ancient Gandhāra during the period following Emperor Aśoka, the narrative unfolds amid political conflict and cultural exchange between Indian, Greek, and Central Asian civilizations. The central character, Charaka, is an intelligent and spiritually restless young novice who struggles between monastic discipline and his profound longing for life, knowledge, love, and human fulfillment. Although devoted to Buddhist teachings, he wrestles with difficult questions concerning Nirvana, personal identity, divine reality, and the value of worldly existence. His internal conflict becomes the foundation for a series of philosophical conversations with monks, rulers, and scholars. The novel also portrays Kanishka, the famous Kushan ruler and patron of Buddhism, as well as the renowned Buddhist philosopher Aśvaghoṣa. Through these characters, Paul Carus examines the historical and theological development of Mahāyāna Buddhism, especially the concept of Amitābha as the embodiment of boundless wisdom, eternal light, and spiritual awakening. Blending literary storytelling with religious philosophy, the work discusses major Buddhist themes such as Nirvana, karma, rebirth, non-self, compassion, and the Bodhisattva ideal. It is valuable not only as a literary work but also as an accessible introduction to Buddhist theology and the intellectual transition from early Buddhism to Mahāyāna traditions.
