Introduction

This volume continues the international encyclopaedic project established to document Buddhism across its textual, doctrinal, historical, artistic, and regional dimensions. Covering entries from “Bhāriṇī-deva” to “Caura-vidhvaṃsana,” it combines concise reference notices with extensive specialist studies based on primary sources in Pāli, Sanskrit, Chinese, Tibetan, and related languages. The volume also preserves the scholarly contribution of G. P. Malalasekera, whose leadership shaped the Encyclopaedia of Buddhism from its inception and established it as a major institutional resource for the academic study of Buddhism.
