Introduction

This volume continues the long-term Sri Lankan scholarly initiative to document the doctrinal, literary, institutional and cultural heritage of Buddhism. Entries are presented as independent reference articles and are frequently supported by canonical sources, inscriptions, historical chronicles, archaeological evidence and modern academic studies. In addition to textual scholarship, the volume includes visual documentation of Buddhist sites and material culture. The photographic plates depict subjects such as the Shwedagon Pagoda, Sri Lankan stūpas, Thai temples and Buddha images, Tibetan religious centres and prominent scholars of Buddhist and Pāli studies. Fascicles Fascicle 1: Śātavāhana–Syāmopāli Nikāya Fascicle 2: Taiwan–Uttarimanussadhamma Fascicle 3: Vācā–Zhong A-han
