Volume 3 continues the encyclopaedia’s alphabetical format while maintaining the broad thematic scope established in the preceding volumes. Entries range from technical doctrinal discussions to historical surveys and regional Buddhist traditions. The treatment of Indian Buddhist philosophical schools is especially significant because it contrasts Vaibhāṣika, Sautrāntika, Yogācāra and Madhyamaka positions on consciousness, ontology and emptiness. The volume also provides detailed material on Buddhist monastic formation, Japanese Buddhist history and the Jātaka tradition.
