Volume 5 completes The Buddhists: Encyclopaedia of Buddhism by covering the final alphabetical range and bringing together several of the most significant subjects in Buddhist Studies.

Its treatment of Tantric Buddhism is particularly extensive. Rather than limiting Tantra to ritual practice, the volume discusses lineage, initiation, mantra, mudrā, maṇḍala, meditation, Mahāyāna philosophical foundations and Vajrayāna theories of transformation. 

The sections on Tārā and Tathāgata add important material on Buddhist iconography, Mahāyāna devotion and Buddhological thought, while the entries on Tendai, Theravāda and Tibet provide comparative perspectives on major Buddhist traditions across Japan, South and Southeast Asia, and the Tibetan cultural world.
