Encyclopaedia of Buddhism: A World Faith, Volume 2: World Peace in Nuclear Age
Introduction
Encyclopaedia of Buddhism: A World Faith — World Peace in Nuclear Age, Volume II examines peace as a comprehensive human, ethical, political, and spiritual project rather than merely the absence of armed conflict. The volume begins with the necessity of world peace and then develops the subject from the individual level outward: personal transformation, contribution to peace, peace zones, ecological responsibility, human rights, the role of the United Nations, India’s place in world peace, and the distinction between non-violence and violence. It also addresses major geopolitical and security questions of the nuclear age, including Pakistan’s nuclear programme, nuclear non-proliferation, the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty, sanctions, small arms, and the broader moral implications of warfare. Throughout these discussions, M. G. Chitkara repeatedly connects political stability with inner discipline, compassion, justice, tolerance, cooperation, and respect for human dignity.
The second major dimension of the volume is the application of Buddhist thought to contemporary peacebuilding. Chapters on Buddhism and just war, the “Smiling Buddha,” Buddhism in the changing world, Kalachakra for world peace, the doctrine of liberation and peace, love and compassion, the Lotus Sutra, dialogue, reconciliation, and perpetual peace present Buddhism as a practical ethical resource for overcoming hatred, conflict, fear, and domination. The work culminates in a broader vision of peace grounded in non-violence, compassion, dialogue, disarmament, and international responsibility, supplemented by appendices on the United Nations and campaigns against nuclear weapons. In this sense, Volume II seeks to bridge Buddhist moral philosophy with the concrete political and security challenges of the modern world, proposing that lasting peace must be cultivated both within the individual and within the structures of global society
