Introduction

The introductory chapter establishes the principal ethical framework of the volume through themes such as universal resurrection, right desire, rejoicing in Dharma, goodness, compassion, mercy, euthanasia, values, ethical standards, character formation, and the Dharma. It argues that moral values acquire significance when they are embodied in conduct rather than merely professed as doctrines. Questions concerning the preservation of life, mercy killing, active and passive euthanasia, conscience, social responsibility, and ethical judgment are used to illustrate the complexity of applying values in concrete situations.

The subsequent chapters extend this inquiry into benevolence, Buddhist humanism, diplomatic conduct, contentment, ecological values, education, ego, environmental ethics, desire, excellence, fearlessness, generosity, administration, human dignity, human qualities, interdependence, knowledge, life, detachment, love, meditation, morality, motherhood, non-violence, ageing, patience, peace, integrity, restraint, law, happiness, enlightenment, punishment, charity, wisdom, truth, harmony, natural resources, vigilance, silence, world peace, and global values. The volume therefore moves from personal morality toward progressively broader social and global ethical concerns.
