Kathāvatthu, Vols. I–II

The volume opens with a title section, dedication, and Preface, in which Arnold C. Taylor explains the manuscript basis of the edition, including Sinhalese and Burmese sources, printed editions, variant readings, and editorial decisions. This is followed by the Index of Questions Discussed in the Kathāvatthu, which organizes the doctrinal debates across two volumes. Vol. I contains the first five vaggas: Paṭhamo Vagga, Dutiyo Vagga, Tatiyo Vagga, Catuttho Vagga, and Pañcamo Vagga, treating core controversies concerning persons, arahants, knowledge, spiritual status, Bodhisattas, doctrinal attainments, and related points of Abhidhamma analysis. Vol. II continues from Chaṭṭho Vagga through Tevīsatimo Vagga, extending the debate structure through further doctrinal issues such as meditative states, karmic consequences, path and fruition, supramundane dhammas, the status of the Buddha, saṅgha, liberation, and contested interpretations of Buddhist teaching. The main body presents the Pāli text of the Kathāvatthu in question-and-answer form, using repeated logical examination to accept, reject, or qualify doctrinal propositions. The volume concludes with indices, including an Index of Proper Names and an Index of Passages from the Sutta Piṭaka quoted in the Kathāvatthu.
