Puggala-Paññatti and Puggala-Paññatti-Aṭṭhakathā

The volume begins with a Foreword by I. B. Horner, explaining the history of the combined reprint and the corrections made to the indexes. The Introduction examines the place of the Puggala-paññatti in the Abhidhamma Piṭaka, noting its distinctive concern with “persons” and its relation to both Sutta and Abhidhamma modes of classification. The main text opens with the Mātikā, which introduces the categories to be analyzed, followed by ten chapters arranged numerically: I. Ekakaṃ, treating single types of persons; II. Dve Puggalā, pairs of persons; III. Tayo Puggalā, groups of three; IV. Cattāro Puggalā, groups of four; V. Pañca Puggalā, groups of five; VI. Cha Puggalā, groups of six; VII. Satta Puggalā, groups of seven; VIII. Aṭṭha Puggalā, groups of eight; IX. Nava Puggalā, groups of nine; and X. Dasa Puggalā, groups of ten. These chapters classify individuals according to moral qualities, spiritual capacities, stages of training, insight, conduct, and attainment. The canonical text is followed by an Index, then the Puggala-paññatti-aṭṭhakathā, the traditional commentary explaining the doctrinal and linguistic meaning of the classifications, with indexes at the end.
