Tikapaṭṭhāna, Vol.II

This volume, Tikapaṭṭhāna of the Abhidhamma Piṭaka, Part II: Kusalattikan, is a scholarly Pali Text Society edition of the Kusalattika section of the Paṭṭhāna, the final and most analytically developed book of the Abhidhamma Piṭaka. The work focuses on wholesome phenomena (kusala dhamma) and examines them through the highly technical framework of conditional relations that characterizes the Abhidhamma method. Rather than treating dhammas as isolated entities, the text analyzes them within a complex network of causal, supportive, co-arising, associative, and dependent relationships. Its structure proceeds through a series of analytical modes, including Paṭiccavāra, Paññattivāra, Niddesavāra, Gaṇanamūlaka, Sahajātavāra, Paccayavāra, Nissayavāra, Saṃsaṭṭhavāra, Sampayuttavāra, Pañhāvāra, Vibhaṅga, and Gaṇanā, each contributing to a systematic exposition of how wholesome states are classified, enumerated, related, and understood within the doctrine of conditionality. The main Pāli text is concise, formulaic, and highly structured, reflecting the scholastic precision of the Abhidhamma tradition and requiring close attention to technical terminology, repetitive analytical patterns, and numerical classifications. In addition to the canonical material, the volume includes a continuation of Buddhaghosa’s commentary from the Pañcappakaraṇaṭṭhakathā, which provides exegetical clarification of the doctrinal categories, conditional relations, and interpretive logic underlying the terse canonical formulations. Mrs. Rhys Davids’ editorial note further situates the volume within the Pali Text Society’s broader project of editing and publishing difficult Pāli canonical and commentarial texts for serious academic study.
