Introduction

The Cariyāpiṭaka is a canonical text of the Khuddaka Nikāya in the Pāli Canon. It presents a collection of stories illustrating the Bodhisatta’s practice of the perfections (pāramīs) throughout his previous lives. Through these narratives, the text demonstrates the cultivation of virtues such as generosity, morality, renunciation, wisdom, energy, patience, truthfulness, determination, loving-kindness, and equanimity. Closely related to the Buddhavaṃsa, the Cariyāpiṭaka provides important evidence for the development of the Bodhisatta ideal in the Theravāda tradition. It serves as a valuable source for understanding the gradual path to Buddhahood and the ethical foundations underlying the attainment of perfect enlightenment.
