The Buddhavaṃsa and the Cariyā-Piṭaka

The Buddhavaṃsa and the Cariyāpiṭaka are two important texts of the Khuddaka Nikāya in the Pāli Canon. The Buddhavaṃsa presents a chronicle of the past Buddhas and recounts the Bodhisatta Gotama’s aspiration to attain Buddhahood, beginning with the prophecy received from Dīpaṅkara Buddha. The Cariyāpiṭaka complements this narrative by describing the Bodhisatta’s practice of the perfections (pāramīs) throughout numerous previous lives.
