Introduction

The Petavatthu is a collection of narratives describing beings reborn in the realm of hungry ghosts as a consequence of unwholesome actions performed in previous lives. Through these accounts, the text illustrates the operation of karma and the ethical consequences of human conduct. Together with the Vimānavatthu, it constitutes an important source for understanding early Buddhist perspectives on moral causation, rebirth, and post-mortem existence.
