Introduction

The Vimānavatthu, a canonical text of the Khuddaka Nikāya, preserves narratives concerning beings who attain rebirth in heavenly realms through the accumulation of meritorious actions in former lives. It is commonly examined in conjunction with the Petavatthu, a companion text that recounts the fate of beings reborn in the realm of hungry ghosts as a consequence of unwholesome karma. Taken together, these two collections provide valuable textual evidence for the study of early Buddhist doctrines of karma, ethical retribution, and rebirth, while also illustrating the moral worldview that underlies the Buddhist soteriological framework.
