Introduction

The Itivuttaka is a canonical collection of short discourses preserved in the Khuddaka Nikāya of the Pāli Canon. Each discourse begins with the formula “Iti vuttaṃ Bhagavatā” (“Thus was said by the Blessed One”), from which the text derives its name. The collection contains concise teachings on ethics, meditation, wisdom, and liberation, combining prose passages with concluding verses. Owing to its doctrinal richness and concise style, the Itivuttaka is regarded as one of the most valuable sources for the study of early Buddhist thought and practice.
