Introduction

The Mahāniddesa is the first and larger division of the Niddesa, a canonical exegetical work included in the Khuddaka Nikāya of the Pāli Canon. It provides detailed explanations and interpretations of the Aṭṭhakavagga section of the Sutta Nipāta, clarifying doctrinal concepts, technical terminology, and linguistic expressions found in some of the earliest Buddhist texts. As one of the oldest commentarial works preserved within the canon itself, the Mahāniddesa occupies a unique place in Buddhist literature. It offers valuable evidence for the development of early Buddhist hermeneutics and serves as an important resource for the study of Pāli language, Buddhist doctrine, and the transmission of canonical teachings in the Theravāda tradition.
