Introduction
General Introduction to the Buddhist Suttas: Explains the selection of seven Pāli suttas as a representative sample of Buddhist scripture, covering doctrine, legend, controversy, ethics, and monastic spirituality.
1. The Book of the Great Decease — Mahā-parinibbāna Suttanta: Narrates the Buddha’s final journey, last teachings, illness, passing away, cremation, relic distribution, and early Buddhist memory of the Teacher.
2. The Foundation of the Kingdom of Righteousness — Dhamma-cakka-ppavattana Sutta: Presents the Four Noble Truths, the Middle Way, and the Noble Eightfold Path as the doctrinal foundation of Buddhist liberation.
3. On Knowledge of the Vedas — Tevijja Suttanta: A doctrinal dialogue critiquing Brahmanical claims to knowledge of Brahmā and emphasizing moral purification and contemplative practice.
4. If He Should Desire — Ākaṅkheyya Sutta: Discusses the disciplined life of a monk and the spiritual fruits associated with ethical conduct and meditation.
5. Barrenness and Bondage — Cetokhila Sutta: Examines mental rigidity, doubt, attachment, and bondage as impediments to progress within the Buddhist path.
6. Legend of the Great King of Glory — Mahā-sudassana Suttanta: Uses royal legend to illustrate impermanence, renunciation, and the transience of worldly power.
7. All the Āsavas — Sabbāsava Sutta: Explains the defilements or outflows and outlines methods for restraining, abandoning, and overcoming them.
